Mount Fuji Hike

Hiking Mount Fuji is one of the most rewarding experiences for travelers seeking adventure and breathtaking views in Japan. As the country’s highest peak, standing at 3,776 meters, Mount Fuji is a symbol of Japan’s natural beauty and holds spiritual significance. The official climbing season runs from early July to early September when the weather is favorable, and the mountain huts are open for rest stops. There are four main routes to the summit: Yoshida, Subashiri, Gotemba, and Fujinomiya, each offering a different level of difficulty and unique landscapes. The Yoshida Trail is the most popular, especially for beginners, as it provides the most facilities and resting points along the way.

While the hike can be challenging due to the altitude and steep terrain, it is accessible for most people with basic fitness. Many hikers choose to begin their ascent in the afternoon and reach the summit by early morning to witness the spectacular sunrise, known as “Goraiko”. Proper preparation is key to a successful climb, including warm clothing, sturdy footwear, plenty of water, and snacks. Some choose to stay overnight in one of the mountain huts to acclimatize to the altitude before making the final push to the top. For those not ready to hike the entire way, there are buses that take visitors to the 5th station, where they can enjoy scenic views without the full climb. Whether for the challenge, the cultural significance, or the views, hiking Mount Fuji is a memorable experience for any visitor to Japan.
